Classic Boxer Control: Elite Adaptor for Early WRX & Liberty RS
The early EJ20G engines found in the first-generation WRX and Liberty RS are legendary, but their electronics are archaic by modern standards. The Elite 1000/1500 Plug ‘n’ Play Adaptor Harness brings these classics into the 21st century. Designed for the MY93-96 WRX and Liberty RS, this adaptor connects the vehicle’s 4-plug factory harness directly to a Haltech Elite ECU. This upgrade eliminates the limitations of the factory chip-based ECU or aging piggyback systems, providing real-time tuning capabilities, data logging, and engine protection features that are essential for preserving these aging engines under increased boost.
Engineering for the EJ20G
The EJ20G utilizes a unique ignition system and idle control architecture that this harness is specifically designed to accommodate. It routes the factory cam and crank angle sensors to the Elite’s inputs, ensuring precise ignition synchronization. The harness supports the factory wastegate solenoid for boost control, or allows for the integration of an aftermarket solenoid for more granular pressure management. Crucially, it allows for the deletion of the restrictive factory Mass Air Flow meter in favor of a MAP-based Speed Density system using the onboard MAP sensor of the Elite ECU and the included external Air Temp Sensor.
Operational Benefits
This plug ‘n’ play solution is the most reliable way to modernize the engine management of a GC8 or Liberty RS. It requires no cutting or splicing of the brittle factory wiring. By moving to an Elite ECU, owners can safely run E85 (with appropriate fuel system upgrades), utilize launch control, and achieve better driveability and fuel economy than the factory computer could ever offer. The harness maintains the function of the factory dashboard tachometer and check engine light (configurable), keeping the cockpit experience authentic.
